In 1968, Miami-Dade County approved a covenant protecting this land for 99 years. The covenant was released in 2020. In 2021, the Board of County Commissioners approved a 550-home residential development.

Save Calusa appealed the zoning approval in court. On May 1, 2024, the Florida Supreme Court reversed the 2021 zoning decision. Save Calusa WON!! But then in December 2024, the developer submitted a revised application proposing 540 homes on the same property.

All Miami-Dade County residents should be concerned about residential development on Parks and Recreation land, the release of long-standing land-use protections, limited resident input, environmental impacts, and the lack of community benefits.

You do not need to live in Calusa to send an opposition letter. Each adult (18+) may sign. Please include your full name and address so your letter counts as a formal County objection.
